Slip Disc

Slip disc is a condition when gel around the disc gets merged with the surrounding tissue making the disc to bulge, split or rupture. A disc is a shock-absorbing cushion between the bones of the spine. They help the bones to smoothly function daily activities like walking, lifting and twisting. Slip disc is also known as Herniated Disc or Prolapsed Disc. At Felix Hospital we provide treatment for slip disc and all problems related to spine.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain and numbness, most commonly on one side of the body
  • Pain that extends to your arms or legs
  • Pain that worsens at night or with certain movements
  • Pain that worsens after standing or sitting
  • Pain when walking short distances
  • Unexplained muscle weakness
  • Tingling, aching, or burning sensations in the affected area
  • Difficulty in controlling bowel movement

Causes

  • Ageing – Wear and tear of muscles and bones called disk degeneration as you age
  • Using back muscles instead of thigh or leg muscles
  • Sudden acute fall, twisting, strain
  • Sedentary Lifestyle

How to Prevent It

  • Use big muscles and safe technique for lifting. For example, bend your knees to lift instead and not your waist.
  • Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight puts more pressure on your back and knees. Maintaining weight also helps to reduce back pain.
  • Stretch periodically. Do not sit/stand in one position for long durations.
  • Do regular exercise. Regular exercise helps to strengthen the muscles in your back, legs and muscles.

Slip Disc Treatment

A qualified orthopaedic specialist can suggest the treatment procedure only after examining the pain area physically and through tests like X-rays, CT Scan, MRI etc depending upon the condition.

Some Non-surgical treatment options include-

  • Physical therapy or Physiotherapy
  • Chiropractic manipulative therapy (CMT) and other chiropractic treatments
  • Osteopathic manipulation
  • Anti-inflammatory medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

Surgery is usually recommended when there are no other treatment options available to provide pain relief.
